Patients often ask me about the health effects of red wine and/or green tea. This is a great article about some of the new research into these powerful foods:

ScienceDaily (June 11, 2010) — In what could lead to a major advance in the treatment of prostate cancer, scientists now know exactly why polyphenols in red wine and green tea inhibit cancer growth. This new discovery, published online in The FASEB Journal, explains how antioxidants in red wine and green tea produce a combined effect to disrupt an important cell signaling pathway necessary for prostate cancer growth. This finding is important because it may lead to the development of drugs that could stop or slow cancer progression, or improve current treatments.

A cup of fresh pineapple chunks eaten will give your body 73 percent of the manganese it needs for the day. Manganese, a trace mineral, is needed for your body to build bone and connective tissues. A recent study found that a combination of glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, and manganese resulted in significant improvement for people with mild to moderate osteoarthritis of the knee.

Bromelain, an enzyme in pineapple, reduces inflammation and will help ease the discomfort of arthritis.

Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncture have also been proven to be very effective in treating the pain and symptoms of arthritis.

My favorite remedy for a head cold with or without a sore throat, and the flu is Wellness Formula, by Source Naturals. I take it whenever I am around people who are sick or coming down with something.

This is a formula to keep on hand this time of year.

Wellness Formula is the #1-selling vitamin and herbal winter supplement. Wellness is uniquely effective because it goes deep to the root cause of body system imbalances. This Bio-Aligned Formula supports interlocking components of the immune system-mucous membranes, cell-mediated immunity and humoral immunity-and also addresses antioxidant defense, stress response, and the respiratory system. A megapotency of vitamin C, plus echinacea, goldenseal, astragalus, propolis and garlic, have made Wellness Formula a welcome companion in the cold-weather battle.

Belly Fat Is More Prominant in US Kids Than Previously

By Mya Blake
More and more US children are gaining belly fat.
Belly fat is becoming a growing problem for US children.

According to a new study published in the US, more and more little children and even teens are gaining belly fat, leading to bigger and bigger waist lines. Since the mid 90’s a 65% increase in the amount of belly fat that is seen on US kids is being reported, a statistic that does not bode well for the future.

Study authors claim that belly fat is more dangerous than having fat on other parts of the body due to the fact that belly fat surrounds vital body organs and increases risk of heart disease and diabetes more than does fat on other parts of the body.

“Belly fat, or central fat, is more strongly correlated with medical complications of obesity, like lipid problems, cholesterol problems, and insulin resistance,” study author Stephen Cook, M.D., of University of Rochester Medical Center’s Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong in Rochester, New York, told Ivanhoe.

“Waist circumference is meant to measure the fat under the skin and around the organs,” said Dr. Cook. “We know that is particularly detrimental, so it’s concerning because we saw it increase more than regular measures of obesity in the same time period.”

Reporting in the November issue of Arthritis & Rheumatism, a German team says a combination of acupuncture and conventional medicine can boost quality of life for patients suffering from osteoarthritis.

And in a second study in the same issue, American researchers say the ingestion of a special turmeric extract could help prevent or curb both acute and chronic rheumatoid arthritis.
click here to read more www.forbes.com
