Acupuncture growing popular as complement to Western medicine
WESTMINSTER, Md. (AP)
Information from: Carroll County (Md.) Times
Like many people who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, Robin Nodes of Westminster takes prescription pain medication every day to cope with the disease that causes her immune system to attack her organs.
To help relieve her from the side effects of these medications, she turns to Greg Padrick, an acupuncturist who practices in Westminster.
Acupuncture, a traditional medical practice rooted in ancient Chinese history, is often used in conjunction with mainstream Western medicine to help patients like Nodes manage chronic health problems.
Doctor Peter Hindenberger of the Ruscombe Mansion Community Health Center in Baltimore says Western medicine is the only type of medical practice in the world that works solely on the physical body. He says it does not involve the concept of energy, which is what makes people individuals rather than clusters of cells.
Nodes, who acknowledges she initially was a bit hesitant about trying alternative treatments, says she was amazed by the relief she felt after only a few appointments.

Ginger And Acupuncture Can Minimize Pregnancy-related Nausea
Ginger and acupuncture can help reduce nausea during pregnancy.
Whether raw, in tea or in capsules, ginger noticeably lessens nausea, according to the Professional Association of Gyneacologists(BVF) in Munich.
The study showed that taking Vitamin B6 and stimulating certain acupuncture points by applying light pressure to body parts also helps. Special bands worn on the wrist can stimulate those points.
Changes in diet can also help, says the BVF. Women suffering from nausea should eat more meals, but smaller portions or eat something before they get up in the morning.
Three of every four women suffer from nausea or vomiting during the first trimester of pregnancy. It is most likely caused when hormones boost metabolic or pancreatic activity. Pancreatic function tests area recommended for especially bad problems.

Pins and needles may help certain medical problems
Nicole Patti
According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, acupuncture is one of the oldest and most commonly used medical procedures in the world. It originated in China more than 2,000 years ago, but it became better known to the United States in 1971.
In the past 20 years, acupuncture has grown in popularity in the United States and it is practiced by thousands of physicians, dentists and other practitioners for relief or prevention of pain and for a variety of other health conditions. Metallic, solid and hair-thin needles are inserted at specific points in the body to help facilitate the flow of energy, thus reducing and preventing pain.
In traditional Chinese medicine, imbalances in the basic energetic flow of life are believed to cause illnesses. These imbalances are referred to as “chee” or “qi.” It is believed that “chee” flows through channels in our bodies called meridians. By inserting fine needles into these meridians acupuncture practitioners believe that the energy flow will rebalance and the natural healing mechanisms in the body will take over.
Mayo Clinic concluded that it is hard to create a definitive list of conditions for which acupuncture might be beneficial. Studies indicate that it might be helpful for numerous diseases and conditions which include migraines, headaches, lower back pain, osteoarthritis, stroke rehabilitation, carpal tunnel syndrome and asthma.

KENS 5 Eyewitness News
Doctors are now turning to the ancient art of acupuncture
to treat all kind of maladies.
Now, doctors are prescribing acupuncture for those who need help with their diet and nutrition.
“I became overweight in the fourth or fifth grade,” said Kevin Rydberg.
Since then, weight has been a struggle. Rydberg peaked at 420 pounds.
“If I didn’t lose the weight, if I didn’t get healthy, then I didn’t have much of a future with my kids,” Rydberg said.
A couple of years ago, Rydberg had a gastric bypass operation.
“I lost a lot of weight, like 160 pounds.”
But then a familiar appetite issue came back: the urge to snack between meals.
Instead of taking medication to help curb the urge, Rydberg tried acupuncture. Tiny needles placed in specific points on the body.
